New York City Mandates COVID-19 Vaccination for Private Sector Employees... Children Must Also Be Vaccinated to Enter Restaurants

[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] New York City has mandated COVID-19 vaccinations for employees of private companies. This measure is in response to the increase in COVID-19 infections and the spread of the Omicron variant during the winter season.

On the 7th (local time), New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that private employers must implement vaccination mandates by the 27th of this month.

Mayor de Blasio emphasized, "With the continuous rise in COVID-19 cases, vaccination mandates are essential to prevent economic shutdowns or cancellations of public events as seen in other countries."

Specific details regarding this vaccination mandate are expected to be announced on the 15th.

This measure is expected to coincide with the federal government's vaccination mandate for employers with more than 100 employees, thereby requiring more New York City employers to verify their employees' vaccination status.

New York City has already mandated vaccinations for public officials.

Additionally, Mayor de Blasio plans to require children aged 5 to 11 to receive at least one dose of the vaccine to access restaurants, health clubs, and theaters. For adults, the existing requirement of at least one vaccine dose has been strengthened to two or more doses.

Recently, the number of Omicron variant infections in New York City has increased to eight, raising concerns about the spread of the virus.
