[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The Myanmar military ran their vehicle into protesters during a crackdown on anti-junta demonstrations, killing five civilians.
According to major foreign media on the 5th (local time), Myanmar military and police charged at protest participants with vehicles during an anti-junta protest in Yangon, the largest city. In the process, five civilians were killed and 15 were reportedly arrested.
The Myanmar military staged a coup on February 1 this year, claiming that the general election held in November last year was fraudulent. The military arrested State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and numerous members of the ruling party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).
Since then, the military has begun violently suppressing anti-coup protests by citizens, and bloodshed has continued unabated.
According to the local human rights organization Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), 1,303 civilians have lost their lives at the hands of the military and police since the coup.
