The Archbishop of Paris, France, resigned amid controversy over a woman-related issue.
On the 2nd (local time), according to major foreign media, the French Bishops' Conference announced in a statement that Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Archbishop Michel Aupetit (70), the Archbishop of the Paris Archdiocese.
Archbishop Aupetit submitted his resignation to the Pope after French local media reported that he had a close relationship with a woman.
A former doctor, Archbishop Aupetit has been overseeing pastoral activities of the Paris Archdiocese since 2018.
He is reported to have firmly denied the allegations, stating that while it is true he was close to the woman mentioned in the media reports, there was no inappropriate relationship.
According to Catholic doctrine, priests are not allowed to marry and must maintain a strict celibate life.
