[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] In the Gwangju area, concerns about the spread of cluster infections are rising as members of a choir, a recreational facility, and officials from the Buk-gu Council have tested positive for COVID-19.
According to Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 3rd, as of 2 p.m. that day, 29 people in Gwangju tested positive for COVID-19, classified as cases number 6399 to 6427.
Among them, 1 person is related to manufacturing in Gwangsan-gu, 8 people are related to a leisure gathering in Dong-gu, 1 person is related to a daycare center in Buk-gu, 2 people are related to a recreational facility in another region, 5 people are related to confirmed cases from other cities and provinces, and 5 people are related to previously confirmed cases.
The one person related to manufacturing in Gwangsan-gu who tested positive that day is a foreigner with Vietnamese nationality. This brings the total cumulative confirmed cases related to manufacturing to 18.
The confirmed cases related to the Dong-gu choir mainly consist of family members and acquaintances. According to the full testing results from the previous day, 6 out of 8 people were confirmed to be elementary school students. The quarantine authorities plan to reclassify contacts and conduct active monitoring. The cumulative confirmed cases related to the Dong-gu choir have increased to 39.
The two confirmed cases related to a camping site in Jeonnam are classmates from the same school as an elementary school student who tested positive the previous day, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 13.
The confirmed cases related to other cities and provinces mainly involve family transmission in Gwangju, Gimpo, and Seoul in Gyeonggi-do.
Among the confirmed cases infected through contact with previously confirmed cases, the chairman of the Buk-gu Council and his spouse were also confirmed to be infected.
Chairman Pyo Beom-sik of Buk-gu tested positive on the morning of that day after developing symptoms following contact with a prior confirmed case on the 24th of last month and undergoing testing the previous day.
Chairman Pyo recently attended a kimchi sharing event in Yangsan-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, and an epidemiological investigation of the attendees is underway.
Since Chairman Pyo’s confirmation coincides with the council session period, concerns about further spread of the infection are high. The Buk-gu mayor, council members, and Buk-gu officials are undergoing diagnostic tests, and quarantine authorities are currently identifying specific contacts.
