Yoo Guk-hee, New Chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, "Will Implement Open Safety Regulations Based on Objective Science"

[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] Yoo Guk-hee, the newly appointed Chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, stated on the 3rd, "Based on objective science, we will create a trustworthy Nuclear Safety and Security Commission through open safety regulations."


President Moon Jae-in made personnel changes at the vice-ministerial level, including Chairperson Yoo and seven others, on the same day. Chairperson Yoo's term will begin on the 4th and last for three years.


Born in 1966, Chairperson Yoo graduated from the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Seoul National University's College of Engineering, earned a master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and obtained a doctorate in Climate Change Policy from the Graduate School of Climate Change at Sejong University.


Between 1991 and 1997, Chairperson Yoo served in the Ministry of Science and Technology in the Nuclear Development Division, Nuclear Cooperation Division, and the Office of Basic Research Coordination. From 1998 to 2007, Yoo worked in the Ministry of Science and Technology in the Basic Science Policy Division, Nuclear Policy Division, and Public Relations Office. Afterwards, Yoo served in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology as Director of the Safety Policy Bureau and Planning and Coordination Officer at the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, and also served as Director of the National Science Museum under the Ministry of Science and ICT.
