Seogwipo Coast Guard Conducts 'Comprehensive Inspection of Ship Fuel Oil Sulfur Content Standards'

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Maritime Police Station (Chief Hwang Junhyun) will conduct a comprehensive inspection on domestic and international vessels until March 31 next year to check compliance with fuel oil sulfur content standards and related regulations in accordance with the implementation of the 3rd Seasonal Fine Dust Management System.

According to Seogwipo Maritime Police Station on the 3rd, the Seasonal Fine Dust Management System is a government-wide measure that implements strengthened reduction and management policies during the winter season when high concentrations of fine dust frequently occur.

This inspection will focus on ▲ compliance with the allowable sulfur content standards in ship fuel oil (fuel oil sample collection and analysis) ▲ verification of entries in the oil record book and fuel oil switching procedures for vessels operating in emission control areas ▲ and illegal discharge of pollutants.

The sulfur content standard for ship fuel oil is 0.5 (wt%) or less regardless of fuel type for vessels engaged in international navigation, while domestic vessels must use diesel with 0.05 (wt%) or less and heavy oil with 0.5 (wt%) or less sulfur content.

Vessels using fuel oil exceeding the standard may be subject to imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won under Article 44 of the Marine Environment Management Act.

A Seogwipo Maritime Police official said, “Please actively participate in complying with the allowable sulfur content standards in fuel oil to reduce fine dust and create a clean sea.”
