'Korean-Style Electronic Shock Device' Pilot Operation from Next Year... New Police Officer Training Extended from 4 to 6 Months

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police are rushing to distribute the 'Korean-style electronic shock device (Taser gun)' to strengthen on-site response capabilities. Plans have also been made to enhance the training quality by extending the training period for new police officers entering the Central Police Academy.

According to the Police Agency on the 3rd, the 'Police On-Site Response Enhancement TF' held its 4th meeting and discussed ▲deployment of Korean-style electronic shock devices ▲introduction of an emergency support request function via police radio ▲enhancement of training for new police officers at the Central Police Academy.

First, unlike existing taser guns, the Korean-style electronic shock device can fire three shots consecutively, and it is lightweight and compact for easy carrying. The police plan to conduct a pilot operation for six months starting January next year, targeting 100 local police officers in four metropolitan police agencies in Seoul, Southern Gyeonggi, Incheon, and Northern Gyeonggi, before expanding distribution.

To prepare for emergencies such as sudden attacks on officers dispatched to the scene, a function that automatically sends location and support request messages to the control room with one touch on the radio will also be introduced in January next year.

Additionally, starting with the 310th new police officers entering this month, the on-campus training period at the Central Police Academy will be extended from 4 months to 6 months. From the 309th class currently in training, a special training focused on physical force to strengthen on-site response capabilities will be conducted for one week before the two-month field training begins.
