Suncheon-si Transforms Abandoned Railway Site in Yeonhyang-dong into Ecological Park

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 2nd that it has completed an ecosystem restoration project on the abandoned railway site along Wellbeing-ro in Yeonhyang-dong.

This year, the city received 420 million KRW in ecosystem conservation cooperation funds from the Ministry of Environment and created habitats and ecological trails on an 8,500㎡ abandoned railway site of the Jeolla Line.

Through this project, the ecological functions of the damaged and neglected abandoned railway site were restored, creating an environment where target species such as the Dongbaksae and the Mulgyulbujeonnabi can inhabit.

In addition, various trees and herbaceous plants such as camellia trees, aster koraiensis, and wild garlic were planted.

Furthermore, to enhance user convenience, four ecological information boards and one rest shelter were installed, promoting biodiversity and providing citizens with healing ecosystem services.

The city decided to name this ecological restoration site "Yulsan Saengtaero," derived from place names originating in the surrounding area.

An official from the Ecological Environment Department stated, "We plan to continuously promote ecosystem restoration projects that will serve as places for ecological function recovery in urban areas as well as for ecological experience and learning," adding, "We will strive to enable citizens to live in a cleaner environment."
