[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has canceled the 'Gyeonggi Tourism Day' event scheduled for the 3rd.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 2nd that it decided to cancel the 'Gyeonggi Tourism Day' event, which was to be held at the Suwon Convention Center on that day, due to concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.
The event was planned for the first time this year to encourage the local tourism industry struggling with COVID-19 and to create an atmosphere for revitalizing Gyeonggi tourism through cooperation with the tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) industries.
Kim Jin-ki, Director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the province, said, "We have prepared this event to support the local tourism industry, which has endured a painful time longer than any other sector in the long tunnel of COVID-19. However, as the spread of COVID-19 shows no sign of slowing down with Omicron running rampant, we have decided to cancel the event."
The province had planned to commend contributors in five fields (tourism revitalization, Gyeonggi MICE industry, regional tourism development, regional festival development, cultural tourism interpretation) for their contributions to the development of Gyeonggi tourism at the event.
Additionally, a commissioning ceremony was prepared for 40 new member companies of the Gyeonggi Tourism and MICE Alliance and 17 places selected as 'Unique Venues,' distinctive meeting spots in the region.
