On the 1st, Kim Gu-nyeon, Chief Judge of Criminal Division 2 at Changwon District Court, announced that stepmother A (44) and biological father B (46), who were tried for child abuse, were each sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year suspension and fined 1 million won.
On December 15 of last year, at their home in Gyeongnam, A became angry over incorrect spacing in a reading report and struck the child's head several times with a broom that was nearby, causing injuries including a concussion with a recovery period of three weeks.
B hit the child's calves 20 times with a clothes hanger rod, complaining that the child did not return home until late at night.
Chief Judge Kim stated, "Abuse negatively affects not only the physical development of a child but also their mental development and self-esteem formation, and can hinder the formation of social bonds. Considering that there appeared to be some disciplinary intent and the need to provide an opportunity for reconciliation, the sentence was determined comprehensively."
