"Legaltech" to Be Called "Legal Information Technology"
"Green Portfolio" to Be Replaced with "Eco-Friendly Profit Strategy"
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on December 1 that the term "legaltech" be replaced in Korean with "beomnyul jeongbo gisul" (legal information technology) or "beomnyul jeongbo gisul seobiseu" (legal information technology service). They also suggested "chinhwangyeong suik jeollyak" (eco-friendly profit strategy) as a Korean alternative to "green portfolio."
Legaltech refers to information and communication technologies that provide various legal services, or services that utilize such technologies. In general, it encompasses services or implementations such as lawyer searches, legal consultation requests, and legal information searches. The Ministry and the Institute selected "legal information technology" and "legal information technology service" as alternatives after reviewing the appropriateness of the meaning and usability at a neologism committee meeting held on November 17. The selection also took into account the results of a survey. In a public acceptance survey conducted with about 2,000 people from November 19 to 24, 97.3% of respondents said the alternatives were appropriate. Additionally, 78.3% agreed on the need to replace foreign terms with Korean alternatives. "Green portfolio" refers to a business strategy that generates profits or preserves the environment by utilizing eco-friendly or renewable energy sources. In this discussion, "eco-friendly profit strategy" was chosen as the alternative.
The neologism committee is a body that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives before difficult foreign neologisms become widespread. Experts from various fields, including Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media, participate in the committee. The Ministry and the Institute plan to continue promoting the use of these alternatives, encouraging government agencies and media outlets to take the lead in adopting them.
