[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] The first case of infection with the new COVID-19 variant Omicron has been reported in Japan.

According to Kyodo News on the 30th, Japanese authorities confirmed that a man in his 30s who entered Narita Airport on the 28th was infected with Omicron. The man, who came from Namibia in South Africa, tested positive for COVID-19 during the entry screening, and genetic analysis confirmed the Omicron variant.

Two family members traveling with him tested negative and were quarantined at designated facilities. Kyodo News reported that the infected individual is a Namibian man.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government has banned new entries of foreigners coming from South Africa and other regions of southern Africa starting from the 28th to prevent the spread of Omicron, and from that day onward, it has generally prohibited the entry of foreigners from around the world.
