Yeosu Civic Groups Demand Full Budget Cut for Gyeongdo Connecting Bridge

Urging Gwangyang Economic Zone Authority to Deny Plans for Residential-Type Accommodation Facility Construction

Yeosu Civic Groups Demand Full Budget Cut for Gyeongdo Connecting Bridge

[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] The Yeosu Citizens' Coalition (hereinafter referred to as the Coalition) in Jeollanam-do has called for the complete cancellation of the budget for the construction of the Yeosu Gyeongdo connecting bridge.

On the 30th, the Coalition issued a statement saying, “Recently, Yeosu City prepared and submitted to the city council a budget plan of 7.3 billion KRW for the ‘Gyeongdo Marine Tourism Complex Access Road Development Fee,’” and demanded, “Withdraw the plan for the residential lodging facilities in Gyeongdo, which has issues of damage to the Dadohae scenic view and view rights, as well as excessive real estate development, and the council should completely cut the budget for the connecting bridge construction project.”

The Gyeongdo access road is part of the total project cost of 119.5 billion KRW, with the national government covering 47.8 billion KRW (40%), Jeollanam-do 23.9 billion KRW (20%), Yeosu City 23.9 billion KRW (20%), and Mirae Asset 23.9 billion KRW (20%) respectively.

Of the 23.9 billion KRW burden by Yeosu City, 7.3 billion KRW for the year 2022 was included in the main budget plan.

However, earlier this year, when Mirae Asset announced plans to promote the construction of residential lodging facilities, strong opposition movements have continued mainly among the city council and civic groups in the region.

The Yeosu City Council adopted a ‘Resolution Urging the Withdrawal of the Gyeongdo Residential Lodging Facility Construction’ at the July extraordinary session, and has clearly expressed opposition through several resolutions, administrative inquiries, and 10-minute speeches.

The Coalition has also urged the withdrawal of the plan through one-person protests and policy forums, stating that “Mirae Asset’s residential lodging facilities pose problems of damage to the Dadohae scenic view and view rights, as well as excessive real estate development.”

The Coalition criticized, “Despite the strong opposition from the local community against the Gyeongdo residential lodging facilities, Yeosu City’s preparation of the budget plan for the access road development fee reveals a lack of communication administration and can be seen as representing Mirae Asset’s position.”

They further urged, “The Yeosu City Council’s Marine City Construction Committee should completely cut the budget plan for the Gyeongdo access road development fee.”

They also demanded that Jeollanam-do and the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone Authority “clearly express their position to prevent residential lodging facilities from being established in Gyeongdo by accepting the opinions of Yeosu citizens, and disallow the construction plans for such facilities.”

To Mirae Asset, they urged the withdrawal of the residential lodging facility construction plan and also called on them to “make efforts to communicate and coexist with the local community and focus on building a world-class tourism theme facility in Gyeongdo as originally promised.”
