[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Production in the Gwangju region in October decreased compared to a year ago due to sluggishness in the automobile and tobacco sectors.
However, consumption showed strength due to robust department store sales, and the investment indicator, construction orders, showed an uptrend due to increased orders in the private sector.
According to the 'Industrial Activity Trends' announced by the Honam Regional Statistics Office on the 30th, the manufacturing production index was 99 (2015=100), down 4.3% from last year.
By industry, tobacco (-27.2%), automobiles (-19.8%), and rubber and plastics (-6.7%) declined.
On the other hand, beverages (33%), electrical equipment (10.8%), and electronic components (10.5%) increased.
Shipments increased by 0.9%, and inventory rose by 8.9%.
The large retail store sales index was 105.2, up 9.2%.
Among these, department store sales increased by 18.1%, while large discount store sales decreased by 3.4%.
By product category, sales of shoes and bags, home appliances, and clothing increased, but cosmetics, entertainment, hobby, and sporting goods showed sluggish performance.
Construction orders in the Gwangju region amounted to 1.0424 trillion won, an increase of 511.2%. The increase in orders was largely due to growth in the private sector rather than the public sector.
