‘Cooperation’ and ‘Connection’ City Busan … Busan City Hosts ‘2021 Busan R&D Week’ '2021 Busan Research and Development (R&D) Week Event' Poster.


[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Trainee Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Busan City will hold the ‘2021 Busan Research and Development (R&D) Week’ at BEXCO Exhibition Hall 2 on December 1-2.


The ‘Busan R&D Week’ is held to make science and technology more familiar to citizens and to inform them of the research and development achievements taking place in the Busan area. The event has been held annually since 2015, making this the 7th year.


This year’s event theme is ‘Cooperative City Busan, Connected City Busan.’


The city selected the theme to emphasize the need for efforts and cooperation for phased daily recovery and the importance of connections with surrounding cities such as Gyeongnam and Ulsan.


Main events include ▲ Busan City’s future technology innovation policy vision ▲ Interviews on outstanding local science and technology research achievements ▲ Awards for contributors in the field of science and technology ▲ Forums on carbon neutrality and energy technology, and region-led innovation realization ▲ Lectures and reading clubs related to climate change and the metaverse.


Side events include the ‘Expatriate Science and Technology Personnel Policy Forum’ and the ‘Busan Science and Technology Promotion Committee.’


At the opening ceremony on the 1st, Busan Mayor Park Hyung-jun is scheduled to announce the future technology innovation policy vision of Busan, aiming to invest 200 billion KRW in Busan’s R&D and attract 2 trillion KRW in government R&D funding by 2025.


At the event, Cho Yong-guk, CEO of Corens, Jang Young-su, President of Pukyong National University, and Kim Woong-seo, President of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, will participate in a talk show exchanging various opinions for Busan’s future development. Additionally, a policy forum on ‘Creating an Industry-Academia Cooperation Innovation Ecosystem in Busan’ will follow with science and technology personnel from Busan.


The awards ceremony for contributions in the field of science and technology will present awards in three categories: the Busan Science and Technology Innovation Award, the Innovation Leader Award for Science and Technology City Creation, and others.


On the 2nd, expert lectures on climate change and the metaverse will be held.


Professor Lee Joon-yi of Busan National University’s Climate Science Research Institute will explain changes in our lives due to global climate change and the future of Busan, a marine city affected by climate change. Professor Lee is a lead author of the IPCC assessment report and the recipient of the ‘2021 Scientist of the Year Award.’


Future Designers CEO Choi Hyung-wook will explain industrial and economic changes following the metaverse trend. TLP CEO Kim Ji-young will give a lecture addressing parents’ concerns in the changing world due to COVID-19 and what competencies children need.


The event will be held both online and offline simultaneously, and detailed events can be viewed in real time on the ‘Busan R&D Week website.’ Various online events such as Facebook support comments, YouTube subscriptions and viewing certifications, pre-registration, and surveys are also prepared.


Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “Through the Busan R&D Week event, we will show citizens the image of a future city leading future technologies.” The event is hosted by Busan City and organized by the Busan Institute of Industrial Science and Innovation.
