[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] SK Telecom announced on the 30th that it will launch various metaverse special exhibitions from December in its metaverse (extended virtual world) service 'ifland', including 'Urban Break 2021', where users can experience artworks such as paintings and photographs, and DC Comics' 'Justice League'.
This metaverse special exhibition was realized in response to requests from artists and exhibition industry stakeholders who had difficulty engaging in activities after the spread of COVID-19. SK Telecom has opened a new space (land) gallery within ifland where artworks such as paintings can be exhibited, supporting artists to showcase their works in the metaverse space. The ifland gallery land can exhibit up to 52 pieces of artwork.
As the first metaverse exhibition in ifland, SK Telecom will operate the Urban Art fair Urban Break 2021*, targeting the MZ generation, throughout December. It will showcase works by 24 emerging young artists including Kwaya, Kim Jaewook, and Leodav. Jang Woncheol, CEO of Urban Break, said, “A new exhibition experience space has opened where young artists and the MZ generation can communicate together through the metaverse exhibition,” adding, “Furthermore, we expect the scope to expand to include the trading of artworks within the metaverse space.”
The second ifland metaverse exhibition is DC Comics' Justice League, which will be permanently operated from December 6. This exhibition consists of 52 images of representative DC Comics characters such as Superman and Batman, which have been difficult to see domestically until now. DC Comics fans in Korea can get an overview of the history of DC Comics superheroes through this exhibition and also participate in a limited edition figure raffle event.
Additionally, from the 15th, various metaverse exhibitions will continue in the ifland gallery land, including 'Memorial Eulji Exhibition', which captures Seoul’s old downtown Euljiro?standing at the crossroads of urban regeneration and redevelopment?through the perspectives of 30 artists.
Along with this, SK Telecom will newly introduce other new lands in December, such as the ‘Christmas Party Plaza’ and ‘K-Pop House’ lands. Jo Ikhwan, head of SK Telecom’s metaverse development, said, “Now you can vividly and safely enjoy artworks in ifland,” and added, “We will continuously present various events so that ifland can establish itself as a new channel where artists and the public can communicate.”
