[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Shinsegae Food has taken steps to support domestic excellent pig farming and meat processing businesses, helping livestock farmers.
On the 29th, Shinsegae Food announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the breeding specialist company ‘Dasan Yookjong’ and the meat processing agricultural corporation ‘Joa’ at its R&D center in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul.
Through this MOU, the three parties agreed to cooperate for mutual development by revitalizing ‘Berkshire K,’ the brand of Dasan Yookjong, the only specialized black pig breeding farm in Korea, and ‘The Chop Shop,’ the brand of Joa, which manufactures premium processed meat products using Berkshire K. Additionally, the three companies sought concrete methods to establish an organic cooperative system to grow ‘Berkshire K’ and ‘The Chop Shop’ into leading domestic pork and processed meat brands.
To this end, Shinsegae Food decided to develop premium ready-to-eat meals using Dasan Yookjong’s black pig ‘Berkshire K.’ Shinsegae Food judged that ‘Berkshire K,’ raised through continuous meat quality improvement and breeding programs in the clean highlands of Jirisan at an altitude of 500 meters, has a softer and juicier texture and a rich flavor compared to regular pork, showing very high potential as a premium pork brand.
Furthermore, Shinsegae Food plans to utilize Joa’s ‘The Chop Shop’ processed meat products, such as sausages, ham, bacon, and jamon, made from ‘Berkshire K,’ as ingredients in its food service and contract catering operations, while also developing various products including premium gift sets to support brand growth and sales.
In addition, Shinsegae Food will promote various joint marketing activities to enhance brand awareness and sales of ‘Berkshire K’ and ‘The Chop Shop,’ as well as support R&D technology.
A Shinsegae Food official said, “We signed this MOU seeing the potential for high value-added business development of excellent domestic pork brands,” adding, “We plan to carry out various activities to expand consumers’ food choices, including domestic pork and alternative meats, which are gaining attention as future foods.”
