[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] SK Ecoplant is expanding its Uzbekistan energy modernization project.
SK Ecoplant announced on the 29th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Uzbekistan Ministry of Foreign Investment and Trade for the 'Uzbekistan Energy Modernization Project' at Lotte Hotel Seoul in Jung-gu, Seoul. The signing ceremony was attended by Kim Jin-hyun, Head of SK Ecoplant Green Renovation Business Group, and Bapaev, Deputy Minister of Uzbekistan Ministry of Foreign Investment and Trade, among others.
The purpose of this agreement is for SK Ecoplant to transfer eco-friendly energy business models to Uzbekistan across five energy-related fields including power plant and district heating system modernization, hydrogen business, and self-generation facility improvement, thereby helping reduce carbon emissions and stabilize energy supply.
First, SK Ecoplant plans to finalize details with the Uzbekistan government regarding the Mubarek Gas Thermal Power Plant modernization project, for which it secured exclusive project development rights in January this year. The selection of EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and Q&M (Operation and Maintenance) contractors as well as financial procurement will be sequentially pursued. This project involves modernizing an aging power plant located in the Mubarek area, 520 km southwest of Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, transforming it into an eco-friendly power plant. The existing aging facilities will be improved, and an approximately 300MW-scale eco-friendly high-efficiency power plant will be added to expand power supply capacity.
The Uzbekistan government's long-awaited district heating system modernization will also be promoted. Aging district heating systems located in five areas including Mubarek and Jizzakh will be modernized and converted into high-efficiency, eco-friendly combined heat and power plants. Additionally, SK Ecoplant plans to strengthen cooperation with the Uzbekistan government in fields such as hydrogen business and self-generation facility improvement.
Kim Jin-hyun, Head of SK Ecoplant Green Renovation Business Group, said, "Through this agreement, we plan to successfully promote the project in collaboration with the Uzbekistan government," adding, "We will leverage our differentiated technology and accumulated experience to create various business opportunities with the Uzbekistan government."
