What Are Winter Snack Preferences at Convenience Stores? ... "Men Prefer Hoppang, Women Prefer Gun-goguma" At CU, a model is introducing convenience store winter snacks such as steamed buns and roasted sweet potatoes.

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] As the weather gets chilly, more people are seeking winter snacks at convenience stores. In particular, steamed buns (Hoppang) are popular among men, while roasted sweet potatoes (Gungoguma) are favored by women.

According to the industry on the 27th, at CU convenience stores, sales of Hoppang and Gungoguma increased by 36.5% and 33.8%, respectively, from last year between last month and the 20th of this month. Looking at the sales ratio, men accounted for 72.6% of Hoppang purchases compared to 27.4% by women, while Gungoguma showed an overwhelming preference among women at 80.5%. During the same period, at 7-Eleven, Hoppang was purchased 68.3% by men and 31.7% by women, and Gungoguma was purchased 73.9% by women and 26.1% by men.

Hoppang, which provides a hearty feeling of fullness, is often chosen by men as a meal substitute, whereas Gungoguma is frequently bought by women who enjoy sweet snacks as a dessert. By location, Hoppang stood out in areas with a high proportion of male foot traffic such as industrial zones, while Gungoguma was prominent in places with many female residents, such as hospitals and neighborhood complex commercial districts.

A convenience store industry official said, “With the early arrival of cold weather this year, sales of winter food and beverages representing convenience stores have risen sharply, recording strong performance. As consumer demand for convenience store food becomes more segmented and diverse, we are carefully analyzing customer purchasing trends to plan differentiated products and promotions.”
