[Asia Economy Reporter Park So-yeon] The number of couples who both receive National Pension benefits is increasing every year, approaching 500,000 pairs. In particular, there are 141 couples who live on a combined monthly National Pension income of over 3 million won.

According to the National Pension Service on the 26th, as of July this year, the number of couples receiving National Pension benefits was counted at 478,048 pairs.

Since the introduction of the National Pension system in 1988, the number of couples receiving benefits has increased to 297,473 pairs in 2017, 298,733 pairs in 2018, 355,382 pairs in 2019, and 427,467 pairs in 2020. If this trend continues, it is expected to exceed 500,000 pairs by the end of this year or early next year.

The combined average pension amount for couples receiving benefits is 837,411 won per month.

The number of couples whose combined monthly National Pension exceeds 3 million won first appeared in 2017 with 3 pairs, then increased rapidly to 6 pairs in 2018, 29 pairs in 2019, 70 pairs in 2020, and reached 141 pairs as of July this year.

There are 5,826 couples receiving a combined monthly pension of over 2 million won, and 135,410 couples receiving over 1 million won monthly.

The highest combined pension amount for a couple recorded 4,354,109 won per month, marking the first time the combined pension exceeded 4 million won monthly.

This couple living in Haeundae-gu, Busan, both joined the National Pension system in January 1988 when it was first implemented. The husband paid into the National Pension until August 2013, and the wife until December 2014, currently receiving 2,130,114 won and 2,223,995 won per month respectively.
