Inspired by France's iconic car model 'Renault 5'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Renault Samsung Motors announced on the 26th that the Renault 5 EV concept car won the grand prize in the passenger car category at the '2021 Future Mobility Awards' ceremony held on the 25th at the Seoul office in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
Hosted by the Choe Chun-sik Green Transportation Graduate School of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the Future Mobility Awards is the world's first concept car awards ceremony conducted through the voluntary participation and evaluation of global automotive journalists. Now in its third year, the Future Mobility Awards selected models that showcased useful transportation technologies and innovative services for future society from 46 concept cars unveiled at global auto shows from last year through the first quarter of this year, choosing winners separately in the passenger and commercial vehicle categories.
The Renault 5 EV concept car, which won the grand prize in the passenger car category, is a strategic model introduced earlier this year alongside Renault Group's new management strategy, 'Renaulution.' It draws inspiration from the Renault 5, a model launched in 1972 and sold over 5.5 million units worldwide until 1985, becoming a symbol of France. It features a striking yellow exterior color and modern approaches with finishes and materials inspired by various fields such as electronics, furniture, and sports.
The award was received on behalf of Renault Group by Dominic Signora, CEO of Renault Samsung Motors, while Gilles Vidal, Renault brand design director, delivered his acceptance remarks via video. Dominic Signora, CEO of Renault Samsung Motors, stated, "The Renault 5 EV concept car expresses Renault's past and future and represents Renault Group's core future vehicle for the electric vehicle era. It is an honor to receive this award on behalf of the group, and I will ensure its significance is well conveyed within Renault Group."
Meanwhile, through the Renaulution management strategy, Renault Group plans to focus on profitability and cash generation by 2023 and strengthen its product lineup by 2025. Additionally, Renault Group has announced that among the 24 models scheduled for release by 2025, half will be in the C and D segments, and more than 10 models will be electric vehicles.
