[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] The animal health technician qualification exam will be held for the first time in February next year.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that the "1st Animal Health Technician Qualification Exam" will be conducted on February 27 next year at KINTEX located in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. The animal health technician system was introduced by revising the Veterinarian Act to foster professionals related to animal treatment and to provide high-quality animal treatment services.

To become an animal health technician, one must graduate from a specialized college or higher institution accredited by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, take the qualification exam, and pass it to be granted the certificate.

However, under special provisions for existing auxiliary personnel working at animal hospitals, those who ▲ have completed and graduated from animal nursing-related courses at a specialized college or higher ▲ have worked at an animal hospital for more than one year after graduating from a specialized college or higher ▲ or those recognized as having a high school graduation level and have worked at an animal hospital for more than three years, can take the qualification exam after completing 120 hours of practical training through the animal health technician special candidate practical education system.

The exam consists of four subjects: ▲ Basic Animal Health Science ▲ Preventive Animal Health Science ▲ Clinical Animal Health Science ▲ Animal Health, Ethics, and Welfare-related Laws and Regulations, with a total of 200 questions. The total exam time is 200 minutes.

Applications will be accepted through the animal health technician qualification exam management system from January 17 to 21 next year. Successful candidates will be announced before March 4, 2022, and examinees can check their results by logging into the animal health technician qualification exam management system under the ‘Check Successful Candidates’ menu.

Even if one passes the qualification exam, to receive the certificate, documents proving the absence of disqualifications and fulfillment of qualification conditions must be submitted according to the "2022 1st Animal Health Technician Qualification Exam Implementation Notice." The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will review the submitted documents and make the final decision on passing.
