Gwangju Metropolitan Council Members Urge Prompt Establishment of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan Council members urged the prompt establishment of the ‘National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center’.

On the 25th, the council members issued a statement demanding, “The ‘National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center establishment,’ a campaign pledge of President Moon Jae-in and one of the top 100 national tasks, should be promptly promoted as promised, and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency must execute the budget within this year.”

They stated, “The establishment of the ‘National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center,’ a long-standing regional wish, was adopted as a Gwangju-Jeonnam win-win pledge among the top 100 national tasks in the Moon Jae-in administration’s five-year national plan announced in July 2017. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases account for 24.3% of the causes of death among Korean citizens, representing the cause of death for one in five deceased individuals, and with population aging, enormous social and economic costs are incurred for diagnosis and treatment.”

They continued, “To address these issues, urgent national-level research along with prevention and management measures through the establishment of the ‘National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center’ is necessary. The planned site for the center in Jangseong-gun Nano Industrial Complex is located within the Gwangju Research and Development Special Zone and is adjacent to Chonnam National University Hospital, Chosun University Hospital, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Korea Photonics Technology Institute, Korea Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Stent Research Institute, Nano Bio Center, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and Gwangju Technopark, making it an optimal location with well-established infrastructure for research institution establishment.”

They also emphasized, “The Nano Industrial Complex and Gwangju Research and Development Special Zone have become new growth engine hubs for Gwangju and Jeonnam. The arrival of the National Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center in this area is an indispensable choice and will lead to synergy effects between the Nano Industrial Complex and the Gwangju Research and Development Special Zone.”
