Seoul City Launches 'Goods Donation' Campaign to Help Energy-Vulnerable Groups Stay Warm This Winter

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Energy Welfare Citizen Fund announced on the 24th that they will promote a goods donation campaign as part of the winter energy-vulnerable support project, ‘Dagaon (多家溫) Seoul.’ The goods donation campaign carries the meaning of ‘Please donate, not just hold onto things.’

This campaign will be conducted by installing donation boxes for goods within companies, where employees can donate unused winter items. The collected items will then be repackaged and distributed to energy-vulnerable groups.

Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Government appointed comedian Kim Tae-gyun as the promotional ambassador for the Seoul Energy Welfare Citizen Fund. Kim, who was appointed as ambassador again this year following last year, will encourage voluntary support from citizens and companies and promote energy welfare projects for vulnerable groups who have difficulty using necessary energy for daily life over the next year.

Since 2015, the Seoul Energy Welfare Citizen Fund has raised a total of 10.5 billion KRW and has carried out various energy welfare projects for approximately 330,000 energy-vulnerable households, including residential energy efficiency improvements, replacement of energy-efficient products, and support for heating and cooling supplies.

Those who wish to help energy-vulnerable groups can participate via bank transfer or mobile phone #text transmission. Members of the Seoul Eco Mileage program can also participate by donating mileage accumulated through energy-saving activities in daily life.

Yoo Yeon-sik, Director of the Climate and Environment Headquarters, said, “People who usually suffer from energy poverty are inevitably more vulnerable to the cold waves in winter, so the helping hands from neighbors are desperately needed,” adding, “We hope that this goods donation campaign and the appointment of the promotional ambassador will serve as an opportunity for more citizens and companies to take an interest in energy-vulnerable groups.”
