Libraries Don't Have to Be Completely Quiet... Gangdong-gu Opens Buk Cafe Library Dadokdadok (多讀茶篤) Godeok Branch

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) held an opening ceremony for the ‘Book Cafe Library Dadokdadok (多讀茶篤) Godeok Branch’ (127 Dongnam-ro 82-gil) on the 22nd.

The newly opened ‘Dadokdadok Godeok Branch’ is the fourth book cafe library introduced by Gangdong-gu. Previously, the district opened the first branch at Gildong Intersection in September last year, followed by the second branch in the Gobundari Traditional Market in the first half of this year, and the third branch on Gucheonmyeon-ro.

Additionally, the fifth branch is scheduled to open by the end of November inside Amsa General Market, and the sixth branch is currently being designed in Gildong.

The book cafe library ‘Dadokdadok (多讀茶篤)’ is a ‘Gangdong-style complex cultural space’ where people meet and communicate through books and tea, as its name suggests. Unlike quiet traditional libraries, ‘Dadokdadok’ allows visitors to chat over tea or relax comfortably without reading.

Dadokdadok Godeok Branch spans four floors from basement level 1 to the third floor above ground, housing approximately 6,000 books catering to various age groups, from infants and elementary school children to general readers, arranged by floor.

The basement level 1 is arranged as a multipurpose room for hosting various cultural events. The first floor serves as an information and reading deck area, with tables where visitors can enjoy a cup of tea besides reading. The second floor focuses on children’s and youth books, designed so families can enjoy reading together in the same space. The third floor contains general books and features sofa lounges to help visitors concentrate on reading.

Moreover, on the first weekend after opening, November 28, Dadokdadok Godeok Branch plans to host a ‘shadow play’ event, accepting 20 family visitor groups on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition, various contents such as book concerts will be developed, fulfilling its role as a ‘Gangdong-style complex cultural space’ where anyone can participate.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “The newly opened Dadokdadok Godeok Branch is expected to attract many residents as it is located near large apartment complexes, residential areas, and schools.” He added, “The district will continue to thoroughly promote the establishment of book cafe libraries throughout Gangdong-gu, along with various public libraries and small library construction projects, to build a foundation for cultural enjoyment for residents.”

The operating hours of ‘Dadokdadok Godeok Branch’ are Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed on Mondays and public holidays). For more details about operations, inquiries can be made at the Culture and Arts Division of Gangdong-gu Office.
