[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] On the 23rd, the Democratic Party of Korea raised their voices opposing a state funeral in relation to the death of former President Jeon Du-hwan, expressing a cautious stance on party leader Song Young-gil's condolence visit.

Senior Spokesperson Ko Yong-jin said in a meeting with reporters at the National Assembly that morning, "According to the law, burial in the National Cemetery is absolutely not allowed. There are no plans to pursue a state funeral."

Senior Spokesperson Ko added, "Former President Roh Tae-woo had a certain historical repentance and reflection, which was the premise for the state funeral approved by the Cabinet meeting, but (former President Jeon) passed away without such things."

Regarding the condolence visit, he said, "It is true that offering condolences to the deceased is part of our culture, but considering the political and historical significance of former President Jeon, it is a situation where he deserves condemnation," and pointed out, "He left behind a historical burden that even makes us hesitate about offering condolences."

However, he stated that the party leader Song's condolence visit is still under consideration. Senior Spokesperson Ko said, "Since the condolence visit carries meaning, if he goes, he should bring a message. We will consider whether it is appropriate or not."

Earlier, presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, after finishing a policy announcement, told reporters, "Jeon Du-hwan is clearly the main culprit of a rebellion and massacre," and criticized, "He never reflected or apologized until the last moment for the unforgivable crime of usurping state power for his personal desires." Regarding plans for a condolence visit, Candidate Lee said, "I have not yet thought about it in the current situation."
