Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries' sea trial of the world's first LNG-powered ultra-large container ship, delivered to India in September last year [Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, a mid-sized shipholding company under Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, announced on the 23rd that it has secured an order for 10 liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered container ships worth 745.6 billion KRW. The contract was made with a European shipowner for 2000 TEU (1 TEU equals one 20ft container) class container ships.
The vessels ordered this time are 204 meters long, 29 meters wide, and 18 meters high, and will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan and delivered sequentially by the second half of 2024. They are equipped with ice-class 1A capabilities to withstand ice and icebergs, and feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion engines that comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emission regulations.
Including the container ships contracted this time, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering plans to produce about half of the total 221 ships ordered this year?107 vessels?with eco-friendly propulsion engines using LNG, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), or methanol fuel. A company official stated, "As regulations in various countries are being strengthened in response to the climate crisis, inquiries about eco-friendly ships continue across various ship types," adding, "We aim to secure orders for profitable, eco-friendly, high value-added ships."
