[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] Reports have emerged that Taylor City in Texas has been confirmed as the site for Samsung Electronics' second foundry (contract manufacturing) plant to be built in the United States.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 22nd (local time), Samsung Electronics has finalized plans to construct its second U.S. plant worth $17 billion (approximately 20 trillion KRW) in Taylor City, Texas.
WSJ, citing sources, reported that Texas Governor Greg Abbott is expected to officially announce this plan as early as the 23rd.
Governor Abbott had previously announced that he would make an "economic-related announcement" at 5 p.m. local time on the 23rd.
According to WSJ, the Samsung Electronics foundry plant to be built in Taylor City is expected to create about 1,800 new jobs.
However, WSJ added that semiconductor production is scheduled to begin by the end of 2024.
