[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A story has been shared about how a 70-year-old man who suddenly collapsed at a mart in Cheonan, Chungnam, was quickly rescued by mart employees and customers.
According to SBS and others on the 22nd, at around 7:56 a.m. on the 19th, a man in his 70s, Mr. A, staggered and lost consciousness, collapsing at the entrance of a mart located in Seobuk-gu, Cheonan.
Startled by the sound of a 'thud,' employees quickly rushed to Mr. A's side and administered first aid. One employee hurriedly began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while another supported Mr. A's neck. A citizen who had come to shop also took off Mr. A's shoes and massaged his feet. The emergency aid by the employees and the citizen continued for three minutes, and miraculously, Mr. A regained consciousness.
The closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed inside the store captured the scene of the employees and citizen calmly responding. CPR began about nine seconds after Mr. A collapsed, and almost simultaneously, the 119 emergency services were notified.
The employees stayed by Mr. A's side, monitoring his condition until the 119 rescue team arrived. They helped Mr. A sit in a chair after he regained consciousness and gave him warm water to drink. Shortly after, paramedics arrived, and Mr. A was safely transported to the hospital.
The employee who performed CPR had not received professional CPR training but instinctively took action when the emergency occurred.
Through the media, this employee said, "Because an elderly person collapsed, I instinctively ran toward Mr. A," and described the situation, "His breathing had stopped."
Meanwhile, a fire department official praised the initial response of the employees and citizens as excellent. Since the golden time for cardiac arrest patients is about four minutes, immediate CPR played a decisive role in helping Mr. A regain consciousness.
