[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] On the 21st, three weeks after the phased return to daily life (With Corona) began, COVID-19 cases surged across the country. The number of new confirmed cases announced as of midnight on the 22nd is expected to reach around 3,000.
According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on the same day, a total of 2,468 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were recorded nationwide. This is the total number of cases from 16 out of 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, excluding Busan. It is 601 more than the 1,867 cases recorded at the same time on the 14th, a week earlier.
Since there is still time until midnight when the tally is finalized, the number of new confirmed cases announced as of midnight on the 22nd is expected to increase further.
Looking at the regions where confirmed cases were reported on that day, 2,026 cases were in the metropolitan area, and 442 cases were in non-metropolitan areas. By each of the 16 metropolitan cities and provinces, Seoul had 1,075 cases, Gyeonggi 790, Incheon 161, Gyeongnam 59, Gwangju 58, Gangwon 54, Daegu 52, Chungnam 47, Gyeongbuk 39, Daejeon 36, Jeonbuk 31, Jeonnam and Chungbuk each 21, Jeju 17, Ulsan 6, and Sejong 1.
Usually, the number of tests decreases over weekends and holidays, leading to a decline in confirmed cases until the early part of the week, but the ongoing spread has nullified this weekend effect.
From the 15th to the 21st, the number of new confirmed cases over the past week were 2,005 → 2,124 → 3,187 → 3,292 → 3,034 → 3,206 → 3,120, with a daily average of about 2,853 cases. Excluding imported cases, the daily average of locally transmitted confirmed cases is about 2,832.
