[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) has officially begun construction of the new Chinchero International Airport in Peru.

Hyundai E&C announced on the 21st that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Chinchero New Airport construction project on the 19th (local time) at the Cusco Provincial Government Office located in southern Peru.

About 80 key local officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Francisco Silva, Minister of Transport and Communications, and Jean-Paul Benavente, Governor of Cusco. From the Korean side, Ambassador Cho Young-jun to Peru, Hyundai E&C President Yoon Young-joon, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Airport Policy Director Joo Jong-wan, and Korea Airports Corporation President Son Chang-wan were present.

Hyundai E&C consecutively won contracts in March and July for the site preparation and terminal construction of the Chinchero New International Airport project, with a total project cost of approximately 760 billion KRW.

The Chinchero New Airport terminal construction project aims to build a state-of-the-art airport in Chinchero City, including an international airport terminal capable of accommodating 5.7 million passengers annually, runways, control towers, and aprons, to boost tourism demand to the world-renowned Inca cultural heritage site Machu Picchu, innovate regional logistics, and create new industries. The 47-month construction period will follow a fast-track method, simultaneously conducting design and construction.

In line with the airport’s reputation as the gateway to the world-famous tourist destination Machu Picchu, the project will apply the cutting-edge design technique BIM (Building Information Modelling) to digitally manage the entire process from design and construction to maintenance. Through 3D architectural modeling, it will differentiate design, shorten construction time, reduce costs, and maximize energy-saving efficiency.

Locally, it is expected that once the new international airport is completed, tourism revenue in Cusco will double within five years, and additional value such as new jobs in tourism-related industries will be created.

Yoon Young-joon, President of Hyundai E&C, said, "Just as Peru’s ancestors built the immortal cultural heritage Machu Picchu with astonishing technology, Hyundai E&C JV, with abundant technology and experience in the airport sector, will develop the Chinchero New Airport into a world-class, cutting-edge eco-friendly airport."

Meanwhile, Hyundai E&C first entered the Latin American market in 2000 with a combined cycle power plant project in Brazil and is currently constructing several large-scale infrastructure projects such as the Chacao Bridge in Chile. Recently, it signed a contract for the $2.8 billion Panama Metro Line 3 construction project, achieving meaningful success in entering the Latin American market. Hyundai E&C continues to pursue follow-up large-scale projects mainly through G2G cooperation based on public-private partnerships in Latin America.
