95 Cities Worldwide, 8 Cities in Asia, Only Domestic City Certified as Grade A... Evaluation Conducted for 965 Cities Globally, Rated Across 8 Grades from A to D(-)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) has been selected as an A-grade city, the highest rating, in the '2021 Carbon Disclosure Project' (CDP) evaluation.
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a UK-based non-profit international organization that provides an international system for measuring, disclosing, managing, and sharing essential environmental information for companies and cities worldwide. Currently, about 9,600 companies and over 1,000 cities around the world are members.
Additionally, based on global networking, CDP collects the largest amount of climate change information worldwide and is the most extensive and credible carbon disclosure platform globally, involved in corporate and city management strategies, policy adjustments, and investments.
Dobong-gu has been participating in this project since 2020 as a signatory of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM), which it joined in 2019.
The CDP evaluation process and certification criteria are very rigorous. Cities must answer about 70 questions across 12 categories, including ▲city status ▲climate vulnerability analysis and response ▲greenhouse gas reduction and implementation plans ▲investment status ▲examples of public-private governance, and only by passing the evaluation agency's standards can they achieve an A grade. Since grades are newly assigned each year through the evaluation process, maintaining an A grade continuously is also challenging.
The 2021 evaluation was conducted on 965 cities worldwide, including 17 domestic cities, and eight grades from A to D(-) were assigned based on the results. Among them, 95 cities received an A grade; Dobong-gu was the only city in Asia and the only one domestically to achieve this rating.
The evaluation organizers stated, “Dobong-gu shows a fantastic example of urban climate crisis response leadership. We greatly anticipate Dobong-gu's dedication to achieving carbon neutrality in the international community.” The district itself analyzes that it received excellent evaluations for its analysis and response to climate vulnerability, greenhouse gas data management and reduction performance, and the concreteness and feasibility of the “Dobong-gu Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy” declared in September 2020.
Alongside this, Dobong-gu aims to be the first basic local government to earn implementation badges in all categories in the separate '2021 Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM)' signatory evaluation.
Mayor Dongjin Lee of Dobong-gu said, “I am pleased and also feel a heavy responsibility to receive the highest rating from the most credible institution globally recognized in urban climate crisis response evaluation. Going forward, as a global city leading climate crisis response, I will continue to fulfill the district’s duties together with residents without change.”
