Over 70 Participants from 10 Latin American Cities... WeGO Expands Influence as South America Regional Office
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The World Smart City Organization (WeGO), the first and largest international consortium in the smart city sector founded under the leadership of Seoul City, announced on the 18th that it will hold the Latin America Smart City Network Workshop (LASCN) online from 9 a.m. on the 25th.
The workshop will be held under the theme of "Digital Urban Planning." About 70 smart city officials from Seoul and 10 Latin American cities including Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic will participate via video conference.
WeGO planned a high-quality sharing workshop to share specialized smart city knowledge and experience tailored to the region and exchange policies and technologies with stakeholders involved in Latin American smart city development, enabling direct application to practical work. The goal is to strengthen the network with Latin American cities where demand for smart cities is active.
Previously, through the LASCN network, Seoul City introduced the Dasan Call Center operation case to Mexico City, which plans to build a smart administrative civil service system benchmarking this example. Both sides are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Seoul City.
Meanwhile, since opening the WeGO South America regional office in 2018, WeGO has been expanding its influence in the South American region as an "international cooperation platform and connector for smart cities." For the 6th WeGO General Assembly to be held in 2023, S?o Paulo (Brazil) and Mexico City (Mexico), representing South America, competed to host, with Mexico City ultimately confirmed as the host city.
Kang Ji-hyun, Seoul City’s Smart City Officer, said, "For Latin American cities facing the critical existing challenge of a sustainable future after the COVID-19 pandemic, cooperation with WeGO will be the solution," adding, "I am confident that WeGO’s smart city network, composed of more than 200 cities, institutions, and companies worldwide, along with Seoul’s advanced smart city policies and technologies, will contribute to the development of Latin American cities."
Park Jung-sook, Secretary-General of WeGO, said, "Based on the five regional offices worldwide that WeGO operates, we will connect smart city stakeholders such as cities and companies and play a pivotal role in the sustainable development of smart cities globally."
