[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Romance movies are filling theaters again this year without fail. The candid and cheeky 'flirting' of actors Jeon Jong-seo and Son Seok-gu unfolds on the screen.
On the afternoon of the 17th, at the press screening of the film Love Without Romance (director Jung Ga-young) held at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Ichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Jeon Jong-seo said, "Through Ja-young, I came to understand the concerns of the youth generation in their late 20s and early 30s."
Opening on the 24th, Love Without Romance depicts a very special romance between Ja-young (Jeon Jong-seo), who dislikes dating but hates loneliness even more, and Woo-ri (Son Seok-gu), whose work and love life both don't go as planned. They start their relationship hiding their names, reasons, and feelings.
Director Jung Ga-young, who has been active in the independent film scene with works like Beach on the Beach (2016), Do You Like Jo In-sung? (2017), and Night Chasing (2018), takes on her first commercial feature film challenge.
On this day, Director Jung said, "I wanted to make a romantic comedy film, and I wanted to convey fun by having a female protagonist freely and boldly express her story, love, life, and sexuality."
With actors Jeon Jong-seo and Son Seok-gu joining, the film gained momentum. Regarding Jeon Jong-seo's casting, the director said, "After watching the Netflix film Call, I felt she was a strong, free, and charming actress, and I thought she would suit Ja-young well, so I offered her the role."
About Son Seok-gu, she said, "His sharp, sexy, and mischievous appearance was impressive, so I wanted to cast him. He realistically portrayed Park Woo-ri's clumsy and lovable side," expressing satisfaction.
Jeon Jong-seo, who plays 29-year-old Ja-young, who has mentally retired from dating but cannot endure loneliness, takes on her first romance role since her debut. She said, "It was the first time I played a role that involved a lot of communication with the co-actor. Even on days without filming, I met separately with Son Seok-gu and talked a lot about the film, which helped a lot during shooting."
Son Seok-gu, who plays 33-year-old Woo-ri, who often gets taken advantage of in both work and love, said, "I acted just as I am on set and repeated going home after filming. I didn't prepare specially and just acted." About Jeon Jong-seo, he recalled, "The moment I saw her face, I felt 'We would look good together' and 'It would look real,' so I acted naturally."
Actually 39 years old, Son Seok-gu shared, "At first, I was cautious about playing a role in my early 30s. I tried acting to look 33, but the response wasn't good. They told me, 'Just act like yourself.' In the end, we reshot the scenes," sharing an episode.
Although the film features tense conversations between the male and female leads and scenes of intimacy in lodging facilities, it received a 15+ age rating. Regarding this, the director said, "I didn't think about whether it would get a 19+ or 15+ rating when writing the script. I hope people see it as an entertaining story about young people flirting rather than focusing on physical exposure."
