[Breaking] Biden: "US Does Not Support Taiwan Independence... Seeks Peace in Taiwan Strait"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] On the 16th, U.S. President Joe Biden stated during a virtual summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping that "the United States does not support Taiwan's independence."

China's state-run CCTV introduced the results of the 194-minute meeting between President Biden and President Xi in this manner.

According to CCTV, during the meeting, President Biden expressed to President Xi that he supports the "One China Principle" and said, "The United States seeks peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

President Biden's remarks on this day are interpreted as the U.S. authorities choosing to maintain the status quo regarding Taiwan independence, which is considered China's 'red line.' There is also an interpretation that the U.S. government aims to more actively improve relations with China and ease tensions between the two sides.

Previously, China, which emphasizes the "One China" principle and is wary of Taiwan's independence, was suggested to possibly invade Taiwan. In fact, this year, Chinese military aircraft have violated Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) more times than ever before.

In response, the U.S. Navy has been navigating near the Taiwan Strait, implementing a deterrence strategy against China.

CCTV also reported that President Xi told President Biden, "The United States and China must stop the zero-sum game against each other."

CCTV conveyed that the two leaders "had sufficient and in-depth communication and exchanges on strategic, comprehensive, fundamental issues and important matters of common concern."
