The webtoon production company ‘Contents Lab Blue’ announced that it has secured a Series A investment worth 10 billion KRW from Korea Investment Partners, Kona Venture Partners, We Ventures, Crit Ventures, Daekyung Investment, and others.
Following a pre-A investment of 3 billion KRW from Kona Venture Partners, this additional successful funding brings the total cumulative investment to 13 billion KRW to date.
Contents Lab Blue is a webtoon production company with various business sectors including novel comics that produce webtoons based on web novel IPs, upcycling that converts popular published comics into webtoons, original IP development through web novels, and localization that produces popular webtoons in multiple languages and cultures through high-quality translation and adaptation.
In particular, localization is a field that has attracted industry attention for Contents Lab Blue’s rapid business expansion, as it is also a focus area for Kakao Entertainment, which has recently acquired a multilingual translation company to actively target overseas markets, and Naver Webtoon, which has made equity investments in Wattpad to secure global original IPs.
For example, ‘Jeopgeunbuka Lady’ produced by Contents Lab Blue launched on Japan’s Piccoma on September 20 and broke the single-title daily sales record on the platform. It also set daily sales records on Tapas in the U.S. and Kakao Page Global in Indonesia.
Additionally, ‘The Tyrant’s Protector is a Villainous Witch,’ launched on October 4 on Thailand’s Kakao Webtoon, also broke the platform’s highest daily sales record on its launch day, demonstrating Contents Lab Blue’s outstanding production capabilities in the overseas webtoon market.
Alongside webtoons and web novels, Contents Lab Blue has completed licensing agreements for several video adaptation scenarios, expanding its IP into dramas, movies, and other video content.
Go Young-to, CEO of Contents Lab Blue, stated, “The systematic webtoon production process the company has built over time is now beginning to show tangible results,” adding, “With this additional investment, we will establish a foundation to actively promote Korean webtoons, which are at the forefront of spreading K-content, to overseas markets.”
