[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] "To prevent the widening gap in capabilities among students, essential education for the future must be sufficiently provided through public education. Everyone should be able to enjoy the benefits of the future digital era."


On the 11th, Minister Lim Hye-sook of the Ministry of Science and ICT stated this in a congratulatory speech at the 'Future Convergent Talent Discussion Forum' held online, saying, "In the future, software and artificial intelligence technologies will be at the center and change our daily lives."


Minister Lim also emphasized, "While providing sufficient education for basic competencies to live in the digital era, such as mathematics, science, and information, we must actively expand the number of specialized teachers," adding, "We will seek various support methods so that young people can acquire digital capabilities and adaptability to change and enter society."


This forum was co-hosted by the offices of National Assembly members Lee Won-wook and Cho Hae-jin. It was organized as a venue to discuss the convergent talents who will lead future society and the educational directions needed for this.


Lee Won-wook, chairman of the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, said in his greeting, "As digital capabilities become a core element of individual and national competitiveness, talent development is becoming the top priority."


Cho Hae-jin, chairman of the Education Committee, also emphasized, "In this rapidly changing era, investing in talents such as future-oriented digital customized education is the most certain way to overcome new challenges of the future."


In the subsequent keynote presentations, Seoul National University President Oh Se-jung proposed the competencies that future talents in Korea should possess under the theme of 'Future Talents in the Era of Digital Transformation.' Lee Min-seok, head of the Innovation Academy, explained the importance of computational thinking and the educational directions for it through his presentation titled 'Future Talent Education Challenging and Growing with Software.'


In the comprehensive discussion, domestic science, technology, and education experts including Han Min-gu, president of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Cho Yul-lae, chairman of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, Park Hyun-je, director of the Software Policy Research Institute, Geum Jong-hae, president of the Korean Mathematical Society, and Kim Han-il, president of the Korean Computer Education Society, attended and shared opinions on the direction of future education.
