University Students' Graduation Projects and Creations Protected as 'Intellectual Property'... Dongmyeong University Conducts 'Design Notice Certification'

University Students' Graduation Projects and Creations Protected as 'Intellectual Property'... Dongmyeong University Conducts 'Design Notice Certification' Dongmyung University plans to support design registration certification to protect the intellectual property of student creations.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Design creations by university students produced during class hours, such as metaverse class reports and graduation projects, are expected to be protected as 'intellectual property.'

Dongmyung University has taken the first step to protect student creations as intellectual property.

They decided to apply the 'Design Notice Certification' to all students enrolled in four courses. Through Design Notice Certification, students learn how to register their creations as intellectual property and are systematically guided to actually register them.

As the use of the metaverse expands, protecting rights online has become a very important issue not only for individuals but also for national society, and the university is moving quickly in response.

The 'Design Notice Certification System,' conducted by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion, is a system that prevents design infringement of creations before design registration or application.

It is a system that proves the design creator and the time of creation to prevent damage from imitation even before registering design rights.

By obtaining this notice certification, creators can have legal responsiveness for their design creations even before securing patent rights.

The Department of Visual Design at Dongmyung University, which has already implemented metaverse graduation exhibitions, decided to apply 'Design Notice Certification' to all 36 students enrolled in four senior-year courses.

In three courses?Graduation Project, Portfolio, and Design Presentation?Professors Jeong Won-jun, Shin In-sik, Kim Jae-ik, and Won Jong-yoon agreed to take intellectual property protection measures for students' submitted works.

Professor Won Jong-yoon of the Department of Visual Design plans to support students in securing intellectual property by collaborating with the 'Dongmyung Idea Club,' which assists students with intellectual property outside of class, and Professor Kim Ji-heon (patent attorney) from the university's Intellectual Property Education Leading University Project Group.

Professor Won said, "We plan to register the class outcomes as patents or designs with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. We are steadily accumulating intellectual property such as academic conference papers by university students and plan to continue expanding this."

Jeong Won-jun, head of the Department of Visual Design, is preparing digital literacy education to protect students' design rights following the online graduation exhibition using the metaverse.

Head Jeong explained, "The core of this education is the Design Notice Certification, which enables students to learn how to register their creations as intellectual property and actually complete the registration."

This service is provided free of charge to university students who submit proof of enrollment and complete the registration process.

Earlier, the Department of Visual Design at Dongmyung University conducted second-semester practical courses using the metaverse platform Gather Town.

Also, the 2021 Visual Design Department graduation exhibition was held in the metaverse. The exhibition was viewed at the 3D metaverse exhibition hall 'MEUM,' and an exhibition of works by 32 prospective graduates was held on the online website 'Behance.'

There is another reason why Dongmyung University is taking steps to protect the intellectual property of its students. Their submissions to various contests have consecutively won awards, recognizing the level of design that must be protected.

At the 2021 Korea Outdoor Advertising Awards (hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety) finals, Visual Design students Jeong Si-yoon and Heo Hye-jin won the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award in the creative advertising category.

At the Busan Outdoor Advertising Awards hosted by Busan City, 20 works won awards consecutively.
