[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] The fashion industry smiled for the first time in a while due to the early winter weather. Although it experienced sluggishness last year due to reduced outings caused by COVID-19 and warmer-than-usual winter weather, related clothing sales have surged recently as the temperature difference between day and night widened significantly and chilly weather continued.
According to the fashion industry on the 6th, sales of the 'Jeopchok Ongam Series' at Shinsegae International's brand Jaju increased by 120% compared to the same period last year, from the 20th of last month to the 2nd of this month.
First introduced in 2019, the 'Jeopchok Ongam Series' features moisture-absorbing and heat-generating functions that convert sweat and moisture from the skin into heat. This year, the functionality has been upgraded and the product range expanded, receiving even better responses. In particular, sales of the Jeopchok Ongam underwear, which recorded the highest sales rate, increased by 157% compared to the same period last year.
For indoor items including bedding from the Jeopchok Ongam line, all products sold out within two months of release last year, and recent sales have increased by 90% compared to last year due to rapid weather changes. Jeopchok Ongam bedding and accessories use charcoal material filling with excellent heat retention and thick, high-weight flannel microfiber fabric.
Shinsegae International's own women's clothing brands BOB, J. Cut, Studio Tomboy, and Ten Months also saw sales jump 46% over ten days from the 22nd to the 31st of last month compared to last year. For the online-exclusive brand Ten Months, sales increased by 53% during the same period, driven by basic tops that are highly utilized as workwear. This is interpreted as an effect of more companies ending remote work following the phased transition to daily life recovery (With COVID-19).
BYC showed a 27.7% increase in sales of BYC winter clothing from the 16th to the 24th of last month compared to the same period last year. Influenced by the early winter weather, BYC's functional heat-generating wear Body Heat led overall sales.
There is also a trend of purchasing outerwear in advance to prepare for winter.
Musinsa Store's outerwear transaction amount in October increased by 52% compared to the same period last year. As autumn cold began in early October, the number of jumper and coat buyers increased, and the proportion of customers preparing padding products to prepare for the winter cold wave was high.
During October, coat transaction amounts increased by 52% compared to last year, and jumpers and jackets increased by more than 28%. In particular, padding products saw a 141% increase in transaction amount, with a notable preference for short padding over long padding. During the same period, short padding products increased sales by more than 156%, while long padding and padding vests increased transaction amounts by over 70%.
