[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced on the 4th that it will officially begin the nationwide implementation of MyData across all sectors in collaboration with related government ministries.

MyData allows data subjects to request the transfer of their personal information, which they have provided to public and private entities, to themselves or third parties, enabling proactive use of this data in data-driven services such as credit evaluation, asset management, and health management. The PIPC expects that the introduction of MyData will contribute to strengthening individuals' rights to manage and control their personal information, fostering the data industry, and creating added value from data.

Currently, MyData implementation is actively underway in sectors such as finance, medical and health care, and telecommunications, but there are differences in progress and content across sectors. To properly utilize MyData across all fields, it is necessary to establish a foundation for standardization to enable the transfer and linkage of personal information between different industries.

As the first step toward nationwide MyData implementation, the PIPC and related ministries will hold the first meeting of the "MyData Standardization Council" on the 5th. The meeting will discuss the MyData standardization promotion plan and the future operation direction of the council.

Participants agreed on the need for the prompt establishment of legal grounds for the right to data portability and the standardization of MyData across sectors to revitalize MyData. They plan to continue cooperation among ministries through activities such as conducting demand surveys for MyData standardization and operating dedicated task forces (TFs) for sector-specific standardization.

Choi Young-jin, Vice Chairman of the PIPC, stated, “The expansion of MyData and inter-sector linkage are essential tasks to guarantee data subjects' rights to decide on their personal information and to enable citizens to become key players in the data economy and enjoy the added value of data.” He added, “With the launch of the council, we will establish the foundation for nationwide MyData implementation to safely and valuably utilize personal information.”
