Goyang-si Promotes 'Creating Public Offices Without Disposable Cups'

Pilot Project for 'Reusable Cup Takeout' Until the End of December

Goyang-si Promotes 'Creating Public Offices Without Disposable Cups'

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Goyang City in Gyeonggi Province has launched an initiative to create "public offices without disposable cups."

The city announced on the 3rd that "by the end of December, a pilot project for 'reusable cup takeout' will be promoted targeting all employees working at City Hall and citizens visiting the building to eradicate the use of disposable products."

To participate in the reusable cup pilot project, customers can order 'reusable cup takeout' at 12 coffee shops around City Hall.

Used reusable cups can be returned to one of six collection boxes installed inside the city hall building.

The collected cups are picked up by a professional cleaning company and go through a seven-step process including washing, sterilization, and vacuum packaging before being reused at the coffee shops.

The city plans to make this project sustainable, encouraging not only city hall employees but also citizens visiting the city hall to practice this together as a part of everyday life.

Meanwhile, on the 1st (local time), Mayor Lee Jae-jun gave a keynote speech representing local governments and was the only Asian city official to do so at the opening ceremony of the city session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) held in Glasgow, UK.
