[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have surpassed 50,000 units in global cumulative sales of their electric vehicles Ioniq 5 and EV6 within six months of release this year.

According to both companies on the 31st, the total sales of Ioniq 5 and EV6 up to September this year amounted to 50,589 units.

The Ioniq 5, Hyundai's first dedicated electric vehicle launched in April, sold 38,517 units, including 15,467 units domestically and 23,050 units exported (based on shipment).

Kia's EV6 recorded global sales of 10,272 units within two months after its launch in August, with 4,564 units sold domestically and 7,508 units exported.

Both models gained explosive popularity from the pre-order stage. On the first day of pre-orders, the Ioniq 5 secured 23,760 contracts, setting the record for the highest number of pre-orders ever for domestic finished cars and electric vehicle models combined.

The EV6 also received 21,016 reservations on its first pre-order day, marking the highest record for Kia's passenger cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) combined.

Both companies plan to continue expanding their global electric vehicle market share by launching subsequent electric vehicles.

Hyundai plans to release the Ioniq 6, a mid-size sedan, next year, and the Ioniq 7, a large SUV, in 2024.

Kia also plans to introduce seven dedicated electric vehicle models by 2027, in addition to the EV6.
