[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] A controversy has erupted as the suspicion of singer Choi Seongbong's 'false cancer battle' has been confirmed to be true.
On the 29th, singer Choi Seongbong sent an apology letter to Xportsnews, admitting that the suspicion of false cancer battle surrounding him was true. He stated, "I sincerely and deeply apologize for causing social turmoil and great disappointment regarding the controversy over the authenticity of the false cancer battle reported in the media. I am currently not battling cancer, and I clarify that the diagnoses of thyroid cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and metastases to the lungs, liver, and kidneys, aside from the previously reported major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, are all false."
He said, "For the past 10 years since the airing of 'Korea's Got Talent' in 2011, many have given me the undeserved title of 'Icon of Hope' and sincerely supported me. I deeply repent for causing false hypocrisy and controversy by claiming to be battling cancer," adding, "I bow my head and sincerely apologize to the many cancer patients who are still spending their days in pain and to the families who have lost loved ones to cancer."
Choi Seongbong revealed, "I have tried my best to live a life worthy of the title 'Icon of Hope' that you gave me, but in reality, I have always been anxious and in pain, unsure where to find meaning and value in life," and continued, "For over ten years, I have endured daily by taking dozens of psychiatric medications driven only by the desire to sing, but the depression and wounds from unknown sources fester, making my life a hell I want to sort out every day."
He added, "I hope you believe that my desire to sing was sincere every moment," but also apologized, saying, "I will now let go of everything and no longer dream of singing. I will live a life of reflection in a humble position, not as the musician Choi Seongbong." Furthermore, he said, "I am currently working at a local restaurant to return the donations I received from you all. Even if it takes some time, I will repay the donations I received for life and live with lifelong remorse for deceiving you with hypocrisy."
He concluded, "Even if my explanation becomes like the story of the 'boy who cried wolf,' I have nothing more to say, but there is one last request I dare to make to you," emphasizing, "I earnestly ask that you do not view my 32 years of life through a lens of false rumors circulating around."
