Gwangyang City Health Center Begins Management of 'Fluoride Application and Scaling for the Elderly'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] The Urban Health Center of Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do, announced on the 29th that it provides free fluoride application and scaling services every year for senior citizens aged 65 and older in Gwangyang City.

The Urban Health Center located in Taein-dong operates fluoride application and scaling three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), while the Jungma Integrated Health Center in Jungma-dong operates these services twice a week (Tuesday, Thursday) to help seniors manage their oral health.

Although there were difficulties in operating fluoride application and scaling services for the elderly in the first half of this year due to COVID-19, the city resumed the program while adhering to quarantine guidelines for seniors who completed their COVID-19 vaccinations.

Seniors who learned about the program make advance reservations by phone, and the health centers provide fluoride application and scaling services on a first-come, first-served basis.

During the fluoride application and scaling procedures, the city conducts a simple survey to understand the seniors' usual oral care habits and provides oral health management education accordingly.

For seniors, who have the highest incidence of gum disease, scaling or professional tooth surface cleaning is performed to suppress the progression of gum disease, and fluoride application is conducted to prevent root surface caries and tooth sensitivity, resulting in high satisfaction among the elderly.

Park Hye-jung, director of the Urban Health Center, said, “Through fluoride application and scaling for seniors, we will do our best to prevent the worsening of periodontal disease, increase interest in oral health care, and promote the health of our elderly citizens.”
