Successful Completion of the First Phase of the Cheongjeong Suncheon Euddeummaeul Project
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Haeryong-myeon, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do (myeonjang Lee Kang-bok) announced on the 27th that it has successfully completed the first year of the project "Zero Marine Waste! Creating Waon Emotional Beach," which started as part of the "Creating the Best Clean Suncheon Village" project.
The Best Village Creation project is a key policy of Jeollanam-do aimed at revitalizing declining village communities, based on voluntary and proactive participation and cooperation of residents.
Waon Village is a fishing village rich in marine resources such as cockles and gizzard shad, and especially, the sunset at Waon Beach is beautiful, attracting many young tourists who want to take emotional photos recently.
As a result, marine waste from fishing activities such as shellfish harvesting, along with household waste due to increased visitors, has become a problem.
To solve the waste problem, village residents voluntarily led environmental cleanup activities at Waon Beach once or twice a month and conducted campaigns to create a clean Waon Beach. They also extensively cleaned up marine waste such as shellfish harvesting gear piled up along the roadside that spoiled the scenery.
Additionally, some shellfish harvesting gear was recycled into chairs, photo zones, and lighting where people can rest, beautifully decorating the village.
Shin Maeng-cheol, head of Waon Village, said, "It was good that village residents could cooperate and unite during the tiring daily life due to COVID-19," and expressed his aspiration, "Next year, we want to create a village garden and photo zone to give warm comfort to visitors to Waon Village."
Lee Kang-bok, head of Haeryong-myeon, said, "The waste piled up throughout the village has noticeably become cleaner thanks to the voluntary participation and efforts of the residents," and added, "I sincerely thank the residents who actively participated to solve village issues and promote community harmony."
