[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in congratulated the inscription of the "Korean Tidal Flats" as a UNESCO World Heritage site and stated that the government will support the conservation of the tidal flats alongside improvements in local livelihoods.
On the 27th, during a video congratulatory message at the Korean Tidal Flats World Heritage inscription ceremony held in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, President Moon said, "Tidal flats are a treasure trove of biodiversity that connects humans and nature as one."
President Moon added, "There was a time when we did not fully appreciate the value of tidal flats. Development was prioritized," and stated, "Now, the government will do its utmost to support both the conservation of tidal flats and the improvement of local livelihoods."
He expressed gratitude to the residents of Seocheon, Gochang, Sinan, Boseong, and Suncheon, saying, "(The World Heritage inscription) is the power of the local residents who have cherished and loved the tidal flats," and emphasized, "The local residents have shown and proven that coexistence is much more beautiful than convenience."
President Moon concluded, "We will carefully ensure that the preservation and management of the World Heritage site are linked to regional development and that ecosystem protection leads to a happier life," and expressed hope that "the vibrant tidal flats and the beautiful life chosen in coexistence will be widely known to the world."
