Continuing Various Social Contribution Activities as a Corporate Citizen, Including Creating Eco-Friendly Forests and Solar Shelters
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] A fine dust reduction forest will be established in Munjeom Park, located in Cheongna International City, Seo-gu, Incheon Metropolitan City.
POSCO Energy held the 'Incheon Fine Dust Reduction No. 2 Forest Establishment Commemoration Event' together with Seo-gu Office of Incheon and the Incheon branch of the ChildFund Korea.
Last year, POSCO Energy created the 'Fine Dust Reduction No. 1 Forest' in Pori Park, selected as a one-company-one-park project in Seo-gu, Incheon, where the Incheon LNG Combined Power Plant is located, supporting residents' healthy urban life.
In Munjeom Park, where the fine dust reduction forest was established this time, 1,611 trees including Zelkova, Magnolia kobus, and shrubs, which are highly effective in blocking fine dust, were planted over 1,000㎡ (300 pyeong) to reduce local concerns about fine dust inflow from the West Sea. POSCO Energy expects that the fine dust reduction forest will reduce approximately 331 kg of carbon annually.
According to research by the National Institute of Forest Science, the Zelkova used in this fine dust reduction forest is known to be the most effective deciduous tree among the 246 species of landscaping trees designated by the Korea Forest Service as fine dust reduction species.
Along with the fine dust reduction forest in Munjeom Park, POSCO Energy also installed a 3kW solar power shelter. The solar shelter’s rooftop solar panels provide shade by blocking sunlight and produce 3,942 kWh of eco-friendly electricity annually, reducing 1.8 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. This effect is equivalent to planting about 265 30-year-old pine trees.
Jung Ki-seop, CEO of POSCO Energy, emphasized, "We will continuously create a clean and safe environment for future generations by establishing eco-friendly forests in urban areas and practice our corporate citizenship management philosophy."
