[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced on the 26th that it will hold the 'Outing with Authors and Bookstores' event to support local bookstores that have been struggling.
The event involves authors invited by Gimhae City giving lectures at local bookstores, aiming to establish these bookstores as cultural hubs. The purpose is to strengthen the bond between local bookstores and citizens by providing a new experience of meeting famous authors at bookstores near their homes.
The lecture fees will be supported by Gimhae City. The city is accepting applications from local bookstores wishing to participate until November 9th and will select five bookstores where authors will give lectures.
The lectures will take place from December 6th to 24th. Gimhae City declared itself a 'Book Reading City' in 2007. Since then, the city has supported local bookstores by purchasing necessary books for city hall and other offices from local bookstores, excluding online bookstores and large bookstores.
Bae Seon-young, Director of the Talent Development Support Division, said, "The management of local bookstores has become very difficult due to the onslaught of large bookstores and the spread of COVID-19." He added, "The city will do its best to support them, including economic assistance through book purchases, building cooperative relationships during various events, and supporting the operation of reading events."
