[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] On the 26th, the People Power Party expressed condolences on the passing of former President Roh Tae-woo, the 13th President of the Republic of Korea, stating, "We pray for his peaceful rest and extend our condolences to the bereaved family."
On the same day, Chief Spokesperson Heo Eun-ah said in an oral statement, "During his candidacy in 1987, he accepted the demand for a direct presidential election through the June 29 Declaration and was elected president under the direct election system."
She continued, "During his tenure, he also achieved accomplishments such as the simultaneous admission of South and North Korea to the United Nations, the adoption of the South-North Basic Agreement, and northern diplomacy."
However, she added, "The fact that he brought about a military regime through the December 12 military coup and his involvement in the civilian massacre during the May 18 Democratic Movement are faults that cannot be covered up for any reason."
Chief Spokesperson Heo said, "The People Power Party will ensure that such unfortunate history is never repeated," and "We respectfully pray for the deceased's eternal peace."
