[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] A man in his 60s with 35 prior convictions cut off his electronic location tracking device (electronic anklet) and fled, prompting the police to launch a manhunt.

According to the Gyeongnam Police Agency on the 26th, Mr. A (62), residing in Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam, violated curfew restrictions on the 25th at around 10:45 PM by driving his car from Goryeong, Gyeongbuk to Suncheon, Jeonnam.

It was later reported that at around 2:55 AM the next day, he damaged the electronic anklet in Suncheon, abandoned his car in a residential area in Geumgok-dong, and fled into a nearby mountain.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice requested police cooperation to locate Mr. A, who had gone missing. The police found Mr. A’s car and mobile phone near the site where the electronic anklet was damaged, reviewed nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV), and are investigating whether he used public transportation such as taxis or buses.

The police are conducting a search around the mountain area using a helicopter and over 80 personnel.

Mr. A is known to have 35 prior convictions, including violations of the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles against Sexual Abuse.
